The Brazilian documentary “A people’s stocktake – A story of the Global Ethical Stocktake” will have its world premiere in London, United Kingdom, on Monday, June 22, during London Climate Action Week. An initiative of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, the film offers a behind-the-scenes look at the dialogues of the Global Ethical Stocktake (GES), held across all continents throughout 2025 as one of the pillars for mobilizing society ahead of the 30th UN Climate Conference (COP30).

The premiere event will be attended by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, João Paulo Capobianco; the CEO of COP30, Ana Toni; the Brazilian Federal Deputy Marina Silva; Brazil’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Antonio Patriota; as well as four GES co-leaders – figures who helped mobilize society across their continents during the process: the Executive Director for Africa and Global Partnerships at the World Resources Institute (WRI), Wanjira Maathai (Africa); the former President of Kiribati, Anote Tong (Oceania); the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Earth Ethics, Karenna Gore (North America); and the former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson (Europe). The film’s directors, Leonardo Menezes and Eduardo Carvalho, will also be present. At the end, there will be an opportunity for the press to interact with the participants.



The Global Ethical Stocktake Initiative will also be launched, which seeks to ensure the continuity and institutional consolidation of the GES by structuring its governance, outcomes, and international engagement, particularly throughout the 2026–2028 cycle (COP31 to COP33), in order to translate ethical principles into recommendations and instruments applicable to the processes of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Confronting the climate crisis through ethics 


Grounded in ethics and culture, the GES prompts reflection on how far we have come and the actions we still need to take so that the planet does not exceed 1.5°C of average warming above pre-industrial levels, the main goal of the Paris Agreement. It also examines why a gap exists between what science says and what political leaders actually do to tackle the root causes of global warming. 

The initiative took shape through Regional Dialogues, which are portrayed in the documentary. By the time COP30 took place, in November 2025, 125 dialogues organized by civil society had also been held around the world, with more than 15,000 participants from 49 nations. Alongside the behind-the-scenes footage and never-before-seen testimonies are artistic performances that engage with the climate crisis. The documentary explores themes such as ethical leadership, climate justice, food insecurity, extreme weather events, people displaced by climate impacts, and the energy transition.
